ECOWEEK

ECOWEEK is a non-profit organization, established in 2005 by architect and social entrepreneur Elias Messinas, with the passion to change peoples’ habits and the mission to raise environmental awareness and to promote sustainability through design and innovation. Based in Greece and Israel, for 15 years ECOWEEK has been engaging, training and empowering more than 4500 students and professionals from 56 countries through inspiring speakers and challenging design workshops, and through empowering programs in leadership and organization. ECOWEEK has become for many young professionals a unique experience and a turning point to their growth and professional career.

For the past 15 years, ECOWEEK has reached out to youth, professionals and the general public in Australia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, China, Denmark, Greece, India, Israel, Italy, Kosovo, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the West-Bank.

After numerous hands-on and physical events, ECOWEEK created the online Challenge for Circular Economy in Design, introduced in May and October 2020. The new online model attracted more than 500 participants from 20 countries. It enabled lectures, virtual games, and design workshops, through experimentation with virtual group communication and sharing of materials platforms. The result was remarkable, and the responses and post-event evaluation extremely positive.

ECOWEEK 2021 IN AEGINA, GREECE | HISTORY + TOURISM + SUSTAINABILITY: Aiming Towards a Sustainable Vision in Practice

This year ECOWEEK celebrates its 15-year anniversary of activity with a very unique international event in Aegina, Greece in August 25 – September 5, 2021.

The event coincides with the celebration of Greece of the 200-year anniversary of the establishment of the modern Greek State with Aegina as its first capital. ECOWEEK joins the celebrations with an international high profile event aiming to send a global message: the past meeting a sustainable future! This is a physical event that will combine online lectures and workshops through ZOOM and YouTube Live Streaming. In Aegina, the sites will include historic sites in downtown Aegina of historic buildings, schools, public open spaces, and more.

The event will address among others the challenges of sustainability, circular economy, and climate change, and will host activities that will promote reuse and recycling, protection of marine ecosystems, energy conservation and renewable energy, e-mobility, sustainable tourism and more.

At ECOWEEK 2021 in Aegina, Greece, the participants will join physical hands-on design-build workshops in historic sites, installations, exhibitions, placemaking and more hands-on activities, related to the 200-year anniversary of Aegina.

The event will strictly follow State guidelines on the pandemic, while engaging in virtual and physical activity that will promote sustainability in the post-pandemic ‘new normal’.
