World Resources Institute

World Resources Institute (WRI) is a global research organization that spans more than 60 countries, with international offices in Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico and the United States, regional offices in Ethiopia (for Africa) and the Netherlands (for Europe), and program offices in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Turkey and the United Kingdom. Our more than 1,000 experts and staff turn big ideas into action at the nexus of environment, economic opportunity and human well-being.

Our Challenge
Natural resources are at the foundation of economic opportunity and human well-being. But today, we are depleting Earth’s resources at rates that are not sustainable, endangering economies and people’s lives. People depend on clean water, fertile land, healthy forests and a stable climate. Livable cities and clean energy are essential for a sustainable planet. We must address these urgent, global challenges this decade.

Our Vision
We envision an equitable and prosperous planet driven by the wise management of natural resources. We aspire to create a world where the actions of government, business and communities combine to eliminate poverty and sustain the natural environment for all people.

Our Approach
In working to achieve global change at scale, we apply a threefold approach that is WRI’s hallmark:
Count It
We start with data, creating user-friendly information systems, protocols and standards. We conduct independent, unbiased research to analyze relationships and design solutions, and communicate our findings in a compelling manner.
Change It
We work with leaders of cities, companies and countries to achieve change, testing our ideas in complex, messy, real-world situations. We set clear objectives and hold ourselves accountable.
Scale It
We identify and overcome barriers to change so that proven solutions spread quickly and widely. We work with coalitions of remarkable leaders who transform business sectors, societies and economies, nationally and globally.

WRI’s mission is to move human society to live in ways that protect Earth’s environment and its capacity to provide for the needs and aspirations of current and future generations.

Our Goals
We focus on seven urgent global challenges that must be addressed to reduce poverty, grow economies and protect natural systems:
Climate: Protect communities and natural ecosystems from damage caused by greenhouse gas emissions, and generate opportunities for people by catalyzing a global transition to a low-carbon economy.
Energy: Drive the scale-up of clean, affordable power systems throughout the world to deliver sustainable socio-economic development.
Food: Ensure the world’s food systems reduce their impact on the environment, drive economic opportunity and sustainably feed 9.6 billion people by 2050.
Forests: Alleviate poverty, enhance food security, conserve biodiversity and mitigate climate change by reducing forest loss and restoring productivity to degraded, deforested lands.
Water: Achieve a water-secure future by mapping, measuring and mitigating global water risks.
Sustainable Cities: Improve quality of life in cities by developing and scaling environmentally, socially and economically sustainable urban and transport solutions.
The Ocean: We are charting the path for a New Ocean Economy that is good for jobs, economic growth and human health — while protecting and restoring the ocean.
Internship Tasks:
Intern in Strategy Development & Performance, Cities Program:
● WRI Ross Center’s Strategy Development & Performance team is responsible for coordinating the strategic development, planning, fundraising, project management, and monitoring, evaluation, & learning (MEL) functions for the center.
● As an intern with the Strategy team, you will have the opportunity to learn what goes into setting institutional priorities and goals, aligning action towards those goals, and evaluating performance for a complex, dynamic non-profit that bridges the gap between a research and on-the-ground action.
● In this internship you support the Strategy Development & Performance team in using tools to retroactively estimate the impact of outcomes delivered by the Cities program since 2015, support the roll-out of an industry-standard monitoring, evaluation and learning platform, and assist in consolidating guidance and self-paced learning materials for Cities staff members to develop project theories of change and results frameworks. These activities will contribute to the compilation of data points and information that is foundational to strategic decision-making.
● This is a great opportunity for anyone who is interested in strategic planning, management or organizational development, as you will be exposed to the detailed work that goes into successfully planning and managing organizational strategy.
Intern in Foundations Relations, Development:
● You will work with the Foundation Relations team and other teams in Development to conduct research on prospects and donors, develop briefings on donors for Executive Team members, draft and track grant acknowledgement letters, write external-facing donor communications and execute donor communications and stewardship strategies, support and edit donor reports, help strengthen internal coordination and knowledge management, manage Salesforce (a constituent relationship management database), support proposal development, among other activities.
● This position also requires support for webinars and events, internal and external meeting logistics and scheduling, and administrative support.
● This internship provides a unique opportunity to gain exposure to the world’s largest and most sophisticated foundation funders. You will have the opportunity to learn about and implement all stages of the donor cultivation cycle – including research, proposal development, solicitation, and stewardship.
● In addition, you will learn about fundraising from other donor types including corporate, government, and individual donors. By supporting and editing proposals and reports you will have the opportunity to learn more about WRI, technical aspects of our work, and grants management.
● Fundraising is a key component of nearly all positions in the non-profit sector. Whether you are interested in a career in fundraising or programmatic work in a non-profit, this internship will help you build essential skills in writing, research, and fundraising and lead to tangible work products upon which to build your career.
Intern in Health & Road Safety, Urban Mobility:
● The internship offers learning opportunities in sustainable urban mobility, road safety, and new mobility, based within the Ross Center’s Urban Mobility program.
● As part of the Urban Mobility team, you will take on research and writing in support of ongoing knowledge products, webinars and events. Topics for this internship will include strategic approaches to road safety, accessibility challenges, political barriers and opportunities to change, or emerging mobility relevant to the developing world.
● This internship offers the opportunity to connect and work closely with our global team of sustainable mobility and urban development experts, and key stakeholders around the world.

Requirements:
● Bachelor’s degree (completed/ongoing)
● Fluency in spoken and written English
● Strong interpersonal and English communicative skills
● Proficiency in MS software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power point)
