Internship Tasks and requirements:
GIGA Information Centre
The GIGA IZ offers internships to students of library and information sciences, as well as to students enrolled in social science programmes with a regional focus, who are interested in gaining experience in a specialist library with integrated discipline-specific information.
Interns at the GIGA IZ will learn about our SydneyPLUS library management system as well as the key work processes in a specialist library, namely:
developing inventory (i.e. selecting and acquiring printed and electronic media)
cataloguing books, book and magazine essays, Internet publications (full texts), and other publications in the World Affairs Online database
indexing content with an international thesaurus
managing journals
supporting users
researching in the OPAC, the specialist database, and IREON
procuring and delivering documents (e.g. interlibrary loan)
creating and maintaining discipline-specific information guides (e.g. link collections for the virtual specialist libraries ilissAfrica and cibera)
Depending on the student’s area of interest and language skills, the internship can be located in one of the four regional sub-libraries (Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, or the Middle East). Alternatively, the internship can focus on a separate project, for example, in the fields of information technology development or library and information science. The GIGA IZ will work with the student to further develop ideas and support the intern in implementing them.
The minimum period of an internship is two months.
GIGA Institute for African Affairs (IAA))
The GIGA Institute for African Affairs (IAA) awards a limited number of general and project-specific internship places to students of economics, social science, and regional studies. This project-based internship offer will also be announced on our homepage.
We always endeavour to provide our interns with a broad overview of our activities at the IAA and to involve them in projects. Those interested in an IAA internship should ideally be at an advanced stage of a master’s degree. The duration of our internships ranges from a minimum of six weeks to a maximum of three months.
GIGA Institute for Asian Studies (IAS)
The GIGA Institute for Asian Studies (IAS) awards a limited number of internship places to students of social sciences and regional studies. We always endeavour to provide our interns with a broad overview of our activities at the IAS. Interns will also have the opportunity to author their own research article.
It is possible to undertake an internship in either the field of research or the library. Those interested in an IAS internship should at least hold a BA in a relevant discipline.
Possible fields or work include, among other things, research assistance and the involvement in research projects(both in consultation with the relevant staff member).
