Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC)

The Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC): operated by DWD under the auspices of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO)
The Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC) provides global precipitation analyses for monitoring and research of the earth’s climate. The centre is a German contribution to the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) and to the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS).

Functions of GPCC
The basic GPCC functions are defined by the ‘Implementation and Data Management Plan for the Global Precipitation Climatology Project’ (WCRP 1990, WMO/TD-No. 367) and comprise:
● Acquisition of precipitation data from meteorological and climate observation networks.
● Quality-control and assessment of the collected resp. used data, correction of errors
● Correction with respect to systematic gauge measuring errors
● Calculation of gridded area-mean monthly precipitation for the earth’s landsurface
● Error assessment for the precipitation totals on the individual gridcell (i.e. sampling error, systematic error component)
● Dissemination of the products
Further GPCC activities are:
● Supervision of and reporting on availability, timeliness and quality of precipitation data (in SYNOP and CLIMAT received via GTS) (GCOS and CBS)
● Statistical analysis of the temporal and spatial variability of precipitation (VASClimO)
● Assessment of high-latitude precipitation including snow observations (APDA)
● Specific case studies
Internship Tasks
Support with general activities, such as document sorting, data collection, translation, basic website maintenance, social media, project management, communication and event help, etc.
The specific content of the internship depends on the needs at that time.

Requirements
● Can accept one or two interns starting from March 2021 for 3 months, but only one intern at a time.
● Applicant should have natural scientific background as well as some coding and programming knowledge.
● English proficiency is essential, German proficiency would be also welcomed.
● Applicants should have passed the third term of university and have to provide a motivation letter, Curriculum vitae, certificate of qualification for university matriculation, confirmation of enrolment and a confirmation letter of the university about the mandatory status
● Strong interpersonal and English communicative skills
● Proficiency in MS software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power point)
