European Brand and Packaging Design Association (epda)

The epda (European Brand & Packaging Design Association) was formed in 1990, when a number of Europe’s leading designers identified a deeply-felt need for a new, European forum. They wanted to share information, ideas and opinions – however controversial – about packaging, identity, literature, point-of-purchase, electronic media.

Our vision
At epda we believe in the power of personal contacts. We love to interact with peers to look beyond the horizon. That’s why we aim at being a great place for packaging designers to meet and to interact. We make sure we are a powerful source of inspiration for our members by providing face-to-face and online opportunities to exchange, to network, to get inspired and to socialise in order to become the voice of the packaging design community.

What we do
Our main meeting point is at our innovative events, which take place every six months. However, our work continues throughout the whole year. We provide opportunities for European designers to meet and interact on a local level, at meetings organised by our National Correspondents. We encourage the highest standards of ethics and practice in design. We promote design and its role in business by including clients in our activities. We offer guidance to European design colleagues on professional training and education. We aim to create links with the EU authorities for the benefit of the design industry. But it’s not all hard work. We also meet informally whenever we can – just to talk.

How we work
We like to keep things simple. The epda is run by its members, for its members. We have an elected board, which develops policy, organises events, and drives the association towards its goals. A permanent, multi-lingual secretariat based in Germany steers the processes operationally and keeps everything under control.
The annual General Assembly carried out digitally gives members the opportunity to vote on epda policies and practices.

Ethical rules
The epda has no authority or intent to be watchdog in design in Europe. The epda is a voluntary association for which members pay an annual fee and can end the relation each year. It is within the intentions and spirit ot the epda and its members to discuss negative elements in the design world which can damage the reputation of designers. If you are an epda member, you have committed yourself to the objectives of the epda.
The Ethical Rules attempt to define the way all members of epda should behave towards colleagues and clients. They are in a way a code of conduct that every member should respect in order to promote and practice their profession while respecting and having consideration for others.
