Earthquakes and Megacities Initiative

Our Mission
To advance knowledge, policy, and practice of urban disaster risk reduction, particularly focusing on megacities and fast-growing metropolises.
EMI is an International Scientific Organization that started in 1998 and established as a not-for-profit NGO in the Philippines in 2003. Over the years, our team of engineers, GIS specialists, planners, and risk management professionals developed sophisticated tools and methods and implemented a multitude of projects that contributed to significant advancements for public and private institutions that partnered with EMI.

Internship Tasks
EMI engages fellows and interns in key urban risk reduction practices such as emergency management, risk sensitive land use planning, risk governance and policy, slums shelter and housing resilience, social participation and protection, vulnerability and risk assessment, knowledge management, GIS (geographic information systems), and capacity building.
EMI is a laboratory for testing assumptions, exchanging knowledge, and developing practical solutions and products that address the risks faced by complex cities and metropolises around the world. Our Global Internship and Fellowship Program enriches the learning experience of participating students through engagements in different projects. Through this process, participants in the program will get the chance to develop tools, conduct assessments, contribute to the development of reports and proposals, do field work, and interact with scientists, experts, practitioners, and local officials.  EMI’s own working environment complements this project-based learning by providing a unique experience with its dynamic and young staff, as well as its global network of experts.
